Sarah Finds a Garden
Once upon a time there was a little girl named Sarah. Sarah had always been fascinated by the stories her mother would tell her. Stories that were about the fairies and other such creatures that lived in the hidden places in trees and bushes. One day when out exploring, Sarah found a small gate. She was thrilled when she found a hidden garden behind the gate.
The Garden is Full of Life
The garden was full of all sorts of beautiful flowers and plants. The air seemed filled with music. As she walked around, she saw many different kinds of animals. Some she recognized, like rabbits and birds, but others were more exotic looking fairy-like beings playing or flitting about among the blossoms.
An Old Woman Cares for the Garden
In one corner of the garden small house appeared, made entirely of window panes. it must be where these lovely creatures live! She felt herself drawn towards it, and as she got closer realized that it wasn’t just glass. The whole house shimmered with magic. Just then, one of the occupants peered out at her from inside. An old woman with long silver hair wearing robes adorned with stars and moons. The old woman smiled kindly at her startled face before beckoning her inside.
The Woman talks of Magic
The old woman was quick, nimble despite her age, and soon had one of the creatures – a little fairy with gossamer wings – trapped in a glass jar. The creature looked so sad and scared that Sarah couldn’t help but feel sorry for it. She asked the woman why she had done this. The old woman said she needed it for her magic. The girl didn’t understand, and so the woman explained. She told her that this fairy was one of the last of its kind. Their magic was dying out and soon they would all be gone. This particular fairy’s power could help to keep the others alive for a little while longer – but only if it were used sparingly and with great care. The girl asked if there was anything she could do to help, and the old woman smiled sadly before shaking her head.
Sarah Releases the Fairy
The creature in the glass jar looked so sad that eventually, even though she knew it meant getting into trouble, Sarah let it out again. She couldn’t just leave it there to die! When confronted by the old woman, she bravely admitted what she had done and begged forgiveness. The old woman was angry, as she needed it for her magic, but she could see the kindness in the little girl’s heart. In a moment of weakness, she let her go and told her never to come back…
Sarah never forgot that day; it was like something out of a dream. And even though she knew better than to return to the old woman’s house, sometimes when she walked past that part of the forest she couldn’t help but wonder if those magical creatures were still there…
